After a successful and very rapid implementation of a face shield production process with local maker groups, RVA Makers, BuildRVA and in Richmond, VA, the GOOD WORK Society has headed south to Wilmington, NC to partner with Wilmington resident Robyn Thomas who is a hard working mother.  GOOD WORK Society founder, Larkin Garbee, posted a call for help in a local Moms Facebook group in Wilmington and Robyn raised her hand. Robyn jumped right into the work and is absolutely knocking it out of the park. As a GOODHEALTHTaskForce leader, Robyn took the reins and quickly assembled a team of local business owners, banking and mortgage service providers, realtors, and actively engaged citizens committed to helping support the PPE shortages that the world is currently experiencing.

“She is an amazing human that believes one person can change the world,” says Larkin.

About Robyn
“In my previous life I worked in pain management. I was also a Special Operations wife. We have a beautiful daughter named Violet, she was born very early coming home from the NICU at only 4lbs. I was raised in a family that believes in civil service and giving back to the communities we live in. America is the greatest nation on earth. Even in tough, tragic, and devastating times, the commonality of being an American, a neighbor, bonds us and encourages us to answer the call to do more for each other.”

How did you get connected to the GOOD Health Task Force?
“It was actually very serendipitous. I woke up at 5am Thursday morning and felt such a heavy weight of anxiety and fear. I listened to Way Maker praying for peace, healing, and understanding. That same morning I saw Larkin’s post in a Wilmington mom's FB group around 7:51AM and I jumped in. I felt the call to do something, anything to help in these times of devastation and confusion.”

Robyn has already secured a warehouse location and is working on donations and volunteers along with securing face shields for the New Hanover County Sheriff's office. We are so excited to have her on the team!

“I am just one woman looking at the world, the country I love so much facing unbelievable hardship trying to do whatever I can to make the smallest difference.”

ABOUT THE GOODHEALTHTaskForce
The GOODHealthTaskForce is an initiative of the GOOD WORK Society that believes that GOOD starts at home.  The GOODSHIELD1000 project provides a playbook that provides a streamlined process, complete with guidelines for anyone to replicate in their community. The materials are already sourced and can be drop-shipped to a chosen location. All it takes is a task force leader to recruit volunteers, recruit a local brewery, warehouse owner or local small batch manufacturer and raise funds. Supplies are drop-shipped to the assembly partner where they can be sorted in a safe environment. Volunteers pick up the box, assemble the shields, and ship to local medical facilities that register that they have need through the online form.

HOW YOU CAN HELP
  1. 1) SPREAD THE WORD: Visit our website, learn our work and share the GOFundMe with your network.
  2. 2) Make a donation: Every dollar counts!  Each face shield is $1.50 material costs and assemble through a true labor of love from amazing volunteers in the community. Donate here.
  3. 3) CONNECT US WITH HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS: If you know healthcare workers that need face shields due to the PPE shortage, send them to our website to request face shields.

What do you do as a photographer amidst social distancing and shelter in place? Member Aaron Moore and her husband/business partner found themselves without work after weddings, corporate events, and headshot sessions were canceled.  As a community focused on sharing ideas and resources, one idea found by another member was passed along to offer family portraits from a distance. Aaron took the idea and ran with it!

Last weekend they started offering 10 minute "Porch-rait" sessions for the local community. Armed with their longest camera lens, they ventured out to take photos (from a safe distance) of people who signed up ahead of time.

"We know you're cooped up with the family and thought this might be a fun way to get out without going anywhere! Make it formal with your Sunday best, or come out in your PJs. Totally up to you!
DM or call with questions or to schedule. Instead of listing a cost, we're leaving this up to you. You can venmo us what you can, or what you feel is best."

The offering was a hit, with 15 requests!  According to a post on their Facebook page,

"
We loved seeing you from a (very comfortable) distance, and capturing sweet families on their front porches all over Columbia."

About Aaron
Aaron lives in Columbia, South Carolina with her husband Josh and their daughter Caroline. The couple started Joshua Aaron Photography in 2008 on the premise that "It takes love to capture love."
This wedding photography duo has since expanded to offer corporate event coverage, professional headshots, and commercial photography. Aaron is also the Vice President of the Columbia Bridal Associates, a group of wedding professionals in the greater Columbia Area.

When Aaron is not taking breathtaking photos or creating masks, she's growing flowers in her backyard cut flower garden to supply local florists, playing piano, or doing any number of creative activities with her daughter Caroline.

Doing GOOD WORK
In the midst of struggling to be creative with their business offerings and providing guidance to members of the Bridal Association, Aaron and her husband have also answered the call to help healthcare workers. They have been 3D printing and assembling shields using their home 3D printer and are collecting funds for supplies to continue the work.

Biggest Challenge
"Knowing where and how to focus my attention and efforts. The first few days of quarantine and social distancing, it was like being in a tornado of information (maybe being from Florida is sparking all these windy weather analogies?). I felt like I had to know it all, be connected to everything, and have the answers immediately. For me this was everything from trying to help Josh source materials for PPE, having aid and loan information for our professional colleagues in the Columbia Bridal Associates, knowing how and when to offer support to other small businesses even though I am one, to figuring out a plan to create income for my own family. It was a lot to try and tackle in a very short amount of time.

Her thoughts on The GOOD WORK Society
"I'm still taking it all in. The past two weeks have been a whirlwind of "crisis" management in the world of weddings. As I watched the event industry crumple around me I had this new collection of great people emerge from what seemed like nowhere. I'm excited to take in more as the dust settles. From what I have been able to participate in, and learn about, I think it's a wonderful community, especially now."
